Benefits of a regular trim.

So your stylist is recommending you to come in every few weeks … but why???

The reason is quite simple:  To remove split ends or dry and sensitized hair so you don’t further damage your locks!

If you leave your split ends it can cause damage to your already healthy hair and more has to be removed in the long run. A trim actually promotes growth and maintain your hair health. It will also make those locks look fuller and less frizzy.

Another benefit since your hair is growing you get to try out new trendy styles, cuts, and dyes.  Have fun with your hair but also love your hair.  Get a trim and let those lovelies grow.

Japanese Hair Straightening

The Benefits

The process has many benefits. The noticeable one is the sleek, frizz free look. Other benefits is its likely to save time each day on not having to fight to dry, wavy or curly hair with a blow dryer and brush. Hair that has been straightened by thermal reconditioning is much quicker to dry. You are also saved from the hassle of fighting frizz from humidity or physical activity.

The Process

The Japanese hair straightening process is extensive. It takes at least 3 to 4 hours and up to  8 hours depending on the length, thickness, and condition of the hair being treated.

1) Consultation

Due to the risks involved with the process (you are making a permanent change to your hair, or at least to the hair that is on you head at the time of the procedure), all professional stylists will meet for a consultation before scheduling you for thermal reconditioning. This is a crucial step as not all hair types can be helped by this technique.

2) Shampoo

If you are confirmed as a good candidate, the actual straightening process will begin with a shampoo and partial drying.

3) Solution is Applied

Unless you have a history of hair coloring or other chemical treatments, the solution or activator will be applied to your hair after the shampooing and will be given time to process. A strand test will be used to determine when your hair is ready to proceed.

4) Ironing

If you pass the strand test, the hair will be rinsed, conditioner and heat protector will be applied, and it will be ironed at very precise temperatures.

5) Neutralizer is Applied

A neutralizer is then applied and left on in order to stabilize the balance of the pH.

6) Blow Drying

More conditioner and heat protectant are then applied before a final blow drying. For a more detailed step by step description of the process.

Immediately following the procedure, you will have to keep your hair dry and free from all kinks for 48 to 72 hours. This means no ponytail holders, hair clips, hats, or combs of any kind. During this time there may still be chemical residue inside the shaft of the individual hairs. Pressure on the hair could cause a bend that will not go away. Even tucking and leaving hair behind the ear could result in a distortion.

Hair Styles that Will Benefit the Most

Certain types of hair will benefit the most from Japanese hair straightening, and some types should not even consider the process. In general, this procedure is a good fit for those with loose curls or wavy hair who are tired of fighting their hair with a flat iron every day.

Care for your Facial

Women get facial at least once in three months and it is required by the skin too. Facial removes dead skin cells, clears the skin pores, scrubs and exfoliates the skin. A facial is thus very important to maintain the glow of your face. In short, a facial is a process where the skin is steamed, scrubbed and massaged. One of the other benefits of having facial is, it removes blackheads that look ugly on the face.

You can either get a facial in the parlour with chemical based products or try your homemade facial. Before getting a facial, you need to prepare your skin for it. For example, removing makeup, knowing your skin type and problems etc. Moreover, you should not go for a facial with styled or freshly washed hair. Facial makes the hair oily. So it is best to wash your hair after the facial. However, after the 90 minutes session with your skin, you need to follow some tips for after care. So, here are the skin care tips for you to follow after getting a facial.
Avoid Sun: It is a very important skin care tip to follow after getting a facial. The UV rays of the sun can damage the skin and also leave scars of burned skin.
Drink Water: This is another skin care tip that you must follow after a facial. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and get a glowing skin. This should indeed be a skin care tip that you must regularly follow.
Avoid Makeup: After getting a facial, avoid makeup. It is ideally good to keep makeup minimal after getting a facial. Makeup blocks the skin pores and also damages it. So after the facial, do not apply makeup.
No Sunbed: For the next 28 hours, you should avoid sunbed as it can be harmful for your skin. So, prefer leaving your face as it is. You can wash with water to remove excess oil and dirt from the skin.
Skip Face Wash: For the next 24 hours, you should not wash your face with a face wash. The chemicals in the face wash can be harmful for the skin.

Rinse With Water: Make this a habit for proper skin care. Washing your face with water keeps the skin hydrated, supple and clean. You must wash your face with water 3-4 hours after the facial is done. This will remove excess oil, dirt from the face and also cleans the skin pores. Try these skin care tips after getting a facial. To maintain the glowing and supple skin, drink lots of water and get rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking. Protect your skin from UV rays of the sun by wearing a hat and applying sunscreen regularly. It is important you book for a facial once in two months or maximum within three months to keep your skin clean and glowing.

The Benefits of Foot Detox

What are the benefits of detox foot baths?

Purging of heavy metals
A more balanced pH level
Reducing inflammation
Purging of yeast
Detoxifying the liver
Internal cleansing with full-body purge
Liver, kidney, and aparasite cleansing
Enhancing the immune system
Who can benefit from ionic detox foot baths?

This is a safe therapy for anyone over the age of 10 years, except for those who wear a pacemaker or have seizures. This is suggested therapy for people who have accumulated many stored toxins and are not able to get rid of them efficiently, due to overworked liver, spleen, and kidney functions. This is especially recommended therapy for those who take a lot of medications. The ionic detox foot bath does not eliminate beneficial medications from the body.

What is an ionic detox foot bath?

An ionic detox foot bath is a natural method of assisting the body in eliminating harmful toxins, heavy metals, and other harmful foreign matter.

What can I expect after a detox foot bath session?

Most people will feel relaxed, balanced, and focused. There is usually no pain. People who suffer from excessive toxicity may experience some discomfort as their bodies release toxins from the tissues for elimination. After a detox foot bath, clients are encouraged to drink plenty of water to assist with making elimination easier and more confortable. Some people may experience fatigue or headache after a session.

What is a detox foot bath session like?

During a session the client sits in a comfortable chair. Most individuals find the experience VERY relaxing and it is not unusual for the client to fall asleep. The session takes about 30–40 minutes. Some people may experience a slight tickling or tingling sensation from the ionic detox foot bath.

How does an ionic detox foot bath work?

Electrical current passes through a set of plates in a module that is immersed in the water inside the foot bath tub. The foot bath water contains a special sea salt, so it has the mineral concentration of water from the ocean. While the client’s feet are in the water, positive and negative ions are emitted by the foot bath system. This re-energizes the body and the red blood cells. It eliminates toxins that are stored in fat, kidneys, liver, bowels, and skin. The foot bath also triggers the body’s lymphatic system, which helps with continuing detoxification for up to 24 to 48 hours after a session.

How do ionic detox foot baths balance molecules?

The major health objective is to have healthy cell molecules. There must be a balance of positive and negative ions in cells and molecules. If the atoms or molecules lose electrons, the atoms and molecules become positively-charged ions. If they gain electrons, they become negatively-charged ions. The ionic technique of cleansing through the feet provides a full-body purge of all vital organs. This can alleviate menopause symptoms, menstrual cramps, sexual health problems, skin problems, acne,
sleep problems, restlessness, stress, toothaches, wrinkles, aches and pains, and yeast infections. The internal cleansing can also contribute to faster disease healing and injury recovery.

Due to a busy and stressful lifestyle, many people do not eat a balanced diet. They may end up storing excessive quantities of toxins and waste products in their bodies. During a detoxifying foot bath session, ions from the module enter the body and begin to neutralize tissue acid wastes. This process is called reverse osmosis.

How many detox foot baths will I need?

It is suggested that you begin with a total of 6 sessions over a 3–5 week period to maximize detoxification. After these initial sessions, you can switch to monthly sessions. The Healing Place offers a detox foot bath series package.

How quickly can I expect results for my condition?

This will depend on your personal condition, lifestyle, and your willingness to take responsibility for your health. The frequency of the detox foot bath sessions also plays a role in how quickly results are achieved.

12 Good Hair Habits (that will save you time and money at the Salon!)

If you really want better (or perfect?) hair, turn away from all those pricey fads you read about in magazines and instead, pick up some daily habits that will actually make a difference between salon visits.   We asked Celebrity Stylist and Master Colorist Dawn Shannon (owner of Intuition Salon and Spa in Clearwater and St. Pete) to spill her secrets on things women with fantastic hair do daily,  and here’s her list!

1. Keep your hair clean!

We’re sure you’ve heard a lot about the “No-Poo movement” (basically not shampooing your hair to preserve your natural oils), but you should actually “listen” to your hair.  As long as you are using high quality products (not the drug or grocery store brands!) you can benefit from more frequent washing.  It reduces split ends, provides great moisture, and gives hair an overall clean and shiny look.

Not sure how often to lather up?  Here’s the key: Wash daily if you live in a city with pollution or humidity, or work out daily. Wash every few days if you live in a rural environment away from pollutants, or an especially dry climate. And if your hair is normal or combination, with dry ends and oily roots, you should split the difference and wash every other day.

(And get a water filter on your shower head to reduce chlorine and mineral deposits!)

2. Know the right amount of product to use — and where to use it.

If you cover your entire head when you shampoo or conditioner, you’re doing it wrong! Concentrate the shampoo on the first few inches of hair at the scalp, where you get the most oil and product buildup — your ends don’t need cleansing as much. As for conditioner, work it in from the mid-shaft to the ends where the hair is driest and prone to split ends.

The Salon Professionals at Intuition Salon and Spa will be more than happy to show you the correct products and techniques for keeping your hair fabulous.

3. Don’t skimp on the moisturizer!

The skin that makes up your scalp needs moisture just like the skin on your face does, especially if it’s going to provide a healthy foundation for hair to grow. A general rule of thumb is to condition every time you shampoo. The skilled professionals at Intuition can analyze your hair and recommend the best shampoo / conditioner combination for your hair type and lifestyle.

But the moisturizing doesn’t end once you leave the shower. Even if you’re not heat-styling your hair (see #10) you should comb through a protective product (leave in conditioner) as this can reduce frizz, dryness, and split ends, and even protect your color!

4. Keep it cool in the shower!

When you’re washing your hair, you don’t want the water too hot. Excess heat can blast the volume out of your hair, leaving you with limp locks. Instead, opt for warm water — this temperature allows you to work up a nice lather while still staying hot enough to rinse suds clean. And when it comes to the final post-conditioner rinse, the colder the better. Chilly water locks in those coveted nutrients into each strand, adding a beautiful, healthy luster.

5. Stay loyal!

It’s a common misconception that switching up your hair care brands keeps your hair healthier because it never gets time to adapt, but many experts disagree. I suggest finding what works for you and sticking with it. Remember: Your hair doesn’t know the difference. And while it’s perfectly fine to change things up when originally searching for that perfect combination that leaves you with killer strands — once you find it, don’t let it go! Also – while store brands may appear “cheaper” at the cash register, they will cost you more in the long run as they don’t do as good a job as our Intuition Salon Brands (so you end up spending more apt the Salon to repair damage) and with Salon Brands you actually use LESS product for better results so each bottle lasts far longer!

6. Eat the right foods!

For all the attention we pay to the hair follicle once it leaves the scalp, half the battle for beautiful hair is already lost (or won) by what you’re putting into your body every day. What you eat plays a huge role in gloss, growth, and volume!

A diet rich in iron, zinc, Omega-3 fatty acids, and protein will help stimulate your hair follicles for growth. Alternating between lean red meat, chicken, and fish during the week for optimum hair health.

7. Take your vitamins!

Even if your diet is impeccable, it’s possible you’re missing out on some crucial hair-boosting vitamins. Not sure if you need them?  The answer is in how healthy (or not-so-healthy) your skin and nails look. For example, if your fingernails are ridging and/or if you have dry, flaky skin, chances are your hair is crying out for help, too. But that’s easy to reverse: Once you start taking the right combo of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs, you can get fuller, shinier, and stronger hair in just a few months. Bonus: Your nails and skin will also benefit.

8. Limit your time in the sun!

You see the damage that a day without sun protection does to your skin, but even though your hair suffers just as much, it can be harder to tell. To prevent sun damage, apply a leave-in conditioner at least every other day. Careful application from mid-shaft to the ends of hair can combat damage from the summer big three — UV rays, wind, and saltwater.

And if you’re headed to the beach where the heat will be coming at you from all directions, spritz a generous application of heat protectant with SPF onto damp hair before going out, followed by a reapplication after swims — same as you would do for your skin.

9. Steer clear of snarls.

Before you go ripping a comb through your strands, think about what you’re doing — and be gentle. Use a wide-toothed comb for particularly tangled locks, and always brush your hair from bottom to top to avoid creating more knots and snarls.

10. Avoid over-heating with your styling tools!

Let’s be honest, you have to use styling tools sometimes, so when you do be sure not to over heat your hair!  The professionals at Intuition are happy to show you the best and safest styling tools available as well as professional techniques for getting the most out your tools with the least amount of possible damage.

11. Sleep on silk!

Silk’s smooth texture won’t rough up your hair cuticle when you sleep the way cotton does, leaving you with smoother hair in return. Fewer frizzy strands in the morning? Now that’s the dream (no pun intended).

12. Get regular trims — even when growing out your hair.

You might be tempted to skip seasonal trims when growing out your hair, but to add healthy length, you actually need to do just the opposite. A haircut every six to eight weeks is necessary to prevent split ends from forming as the hair cuticle splits.

When the split goes up the hair shaft, it becomes so thin that it breaks — that’s when people get breakage. Once your hair splits, there’s no way to repair it, so keep it trimmed to prevent harmful breakage before it starts.

Thinning Hair? We can help!!

It’s a good thing Rapunzel was only 12 when she got stuck in the tower—had she been much older, her hair wouldn’t have been thick enough to climb. Nothing can turn sparse hair into an abundant mane, but using a follicle booster (which intuition can help you find the right one for you)  which actually stimulates the follicle, can slow down hair loss and promote growth.   And studies have shown that LED light activates the cells in the follicle that grow hair.  You should also get a good filter on your shower head so your hair isn’t being bombarded with hard water and additives.

Supplements can also beef up thin strands. “There’s a lot of science that vitamins that are good for skin—antioxidants, vitamin B, calcium, zinc, and iron—also promote healthy hair,” says Dawn Shannon, Master Stylist and owner of Intuition Salon and Spa.   “Biotin and niacin can do wonders for hair in a weakened state, but you don’t get enough from regular multivitamins.”  Doctors recommend at least 1,000 micrograms of biotin and 500 milligrams of niacin a day.

At the very least, shampoos and conditioners created for fine or thinning hair can give the appearance of thickness.  They coat the hair with a positive electric chargethat adheres to the hair’s negative charge, creating more space between each strand, which makes hair look fuller. Mousse, styling spray, and aerosol hair spray can also create fullness by lifting hair at the root. Heat-activated products, for their part, prevent damage and “seal conditioners into the hair fiber, which makes the hair thicker and firmer,” says Shannon.

A quick style modification can work, too.  As opposed to a wispy cut, thick bangs with slightly uneven ends create the illusion of more hair. If they start to look stringy as they grow out, a dry shampoo will help plump them up.

Dawn Shannon’s Intuition Salon & Spa can help you or your loved one with thinning hair.   We are proud to offer Organic Hair Care, Organic Color Correction, Organic Hair Color, Organic Skincare, as well as Organic Candles and Soaps!

Did you know?

So,  you’ve decided that you want to color your hair?  That’s great!  But you’re not too thrilled about the prospect of dousing your scalp in harsh chemicals?   We understand!

DID YOU KNOW that normal hair dye can damage hair significantly (over time) potentially causing your lovely locks to become dry, coarse, and prone to breakage?    And not only is your hair and scalp being exposed to these chemicals, but your hair stylists and the environment are impacted negatively as well. (And let’s not even talk about the awful smell that must be endured.)

But there is another way, and it’s gentler AND more natural: Organic Hair Color.

Now some salon’s claim to be “organic” and are not … or ARE organic and don’t get the expected results or results that last only a very short time.

Lucky for us,  the Organic Hair Color Experts at Intuition Salon and Spa use only safe, organic, long-lasting products that will leave your hair softer and shinier, and which contain far fewer chemicals than standard dye while still being effective and long-lasting!

And unlike many other salons, Dawn Shannon’s Intuition Salon & Spa (in downtown Clearwater and in St. Petersburg on Central) is not tied with any one specific name brand or line – but are completely independent with Dawn herself constantly researching for the best, and safest, and most effective organic solutions for our clients in her salons and for them to take home as well.

So what do YOU think about organic color?   Have you tried it?  Did it work for you?

Let me know in your comments below!

Curling Irons

Dawn says:

“There are quite a few curling irons on the market today.

“I recommend the GHD (Good Hair Hair) because it not only works fabulously and lasts a looooooong time (great value!) but it also does NOT fry the hair as many other irons do.

“Go with the GHD – the tool that helps make “Having a Good Hair Day” on a daily basis a reality!”
