Massage Healthy Living

Massage has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, if you need or want a massage, you can choose from among 80 massage therapy styles with a wide variety of pressures, movements, and techniques. These all involve pressing, rubbing, or manipulating muscles and other soft tissues with hands and fingers. Sometimes, even forearms, elbows, or feet are used.

According to a 2007 American Massage Therapy Association survey, almost a quarter of all adult Americans had at least one massage in the previous year. And, they have a wide range of reasons for doing so. More and more people — especially baby boomers — recognize the health benefits of massage. They choose from among many massage styles to get relief from symptoms or to heal injuries, to help with certain health conditions, and to promote overall wellness.

Here is information you can use to help you decide what types of massage will work best for you.

 Which Massage Styles Are Best?

You may have noticed that different massage styles are popular at different times. And you may have wondered whether each was just part of a passing fad or the latest, greatest massage technique? Even more important is how can you tell whether the latest style will actually help you? Styles used in massage therapy range from long, smooth strokes to short, percussive strokes. Some massage therapists use oils and lotions; others do not.

Before you can decide which massage style is best for you, you need to ask yourself a question. Do you simply want a massage for relaxation and stress control? Or do you need symptom relief or help with a certain health condition? Before booking a massage, let the therapist know what you’re looking for and ask which style the therapist uses. Many use more than one style, or the therapist may customize your massage, depending on your age, condition, or any special needs or goals you have.

What follows is a list of some of the more popular massage therapy styles. The first four are especially popular.

 Swedish Massage

The most common type of massage is Swedish massage therapy. It involves soft, long, kneading strokes, as well as light, rhythmic, tapping strokes, on topmost layers of muscles. This is also combined with movement of the joints. By relieving muscle tension, Swedish therapy can be both relaxing and energizing, and it may even help after an injury.

 Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is best for giving attention to certain painful, stiff “trouble spots” in your body. The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep under your skin. Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, deep tissue massage can be quite therapeutic — relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries, such as back sprain.

 Hot Stone Massage

For this kind of massage, the therapist places warmed stones on certain areas of the body, such as acupressure points. The stones may be used as massage tools or be temporarily left in place. Used along with other massage techniques, hot stones can be quite soothing and relaxing as they transmit heat deep into the body.

 Pregnancy Massage

During pregnancy, your body goes through major changes. Pregnancy massage can help with these changes by reducing stress, decreasing arm and leg swelling, and relieving muscle and joint pain. Massage may be particularly helpful during a time when medication and other medical options may be more limited. Using specially designed massage pillows, the massage therapist will help get you into a comfortable position for this type of massage.

What Are the Health Benefits of Massage?

Many types of massage offer benefits beyond simple relaxation. Here are just a few of the health problems that may benefit from massage. Ask your doctor before using massage for any health condition, though.

  • Headache. Another type of pain- also responds to massage therapy, as shown by more than one study. Massage therapy can reduce the number of migraines a person has and also improve sleep Osteoarthritis . In the first clinical trial looking at the effectiveness of Swedish massage for knee osteoarthritis, participants who received a one-hour massage either one or two times a week had improvements in pain, stiffness, and function. The control group had no such change.
  • Cancer. Used as a complement to traditional, Western medicine, massage can promote relaxation and reduce Cancer Symptoms or side effects of treatment. It may help reduce pain, swelling, fatigue, nausea or depression, for example, or improve the function of your immune system.
  • Anxiety. A review of more than 12 studies shows that massage helps relieve Depression and Anxiety. It lowered levels of cortisol by up to 50%. And massage increased levels of neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.

Ditch the Chemicals!

Trust me, when it comes to hair dye, I’m as picky as a girl can be. I’ve been dyeing my hair  for 12 years, and I’ve managed to pick up a few tricks:  I know exactly what to say to get the right shade (“copper tones, not purple”) and I’ve strategized how to reduce the damage for my single-process dye job (only color the roots and use a glaze on the ends).

But after all of those years of gaining expertise at a regular salon, I still wasn’t 100 percent satisfied with the results. My once-resilient hair had started to become dry and less vibrant, and the color seemed to fade within a week.  So I decided to give the organic hair color experts at Intuition Salon and Spa St. Pete a try.

Sure, the prospect was scary at first — I’m just as guilty as most people when it comes to equating “natural” with “less effective” when assessing beauty products. But after a little research, I discovered Intuition Salon and Spa and became intrigued.

Standard, non-organic hair dye is loaded with all sorts of questionably safe chemicals:  ammonia,  formaldehyde, sodium laurel sulphates and parabens,  to name a few.  Much of the research focuses on how the chemicals affect the salon workers who use them daily, but it’s not hard to see how years of chemical abuse would leave my hair — and that of 75 percent of American women who admit to dyeing their hair — less shiny and soft.  (Aging, it should be noted, could be a factor here, too.)

But even the most pleasant smells couldn’t get me to go organic if the results weren’t at least as good as the chemical stuff.  Luckily, they were. After Intuition was done with me, the color was the most striking shade of copper red I’ve ever had, and I didn’t have that pesky line of demarcation that always gives me what I call “fire roots” (freshly dyed roots that never seem to blend properly until after a couple of washes). The best part: My hair felt 10 pounds lighter and as soft as an 8-year-old’s.  Needless to say, I’m an organic hair dye convert.

Just like with standard dye, the experts at Intuition told me that the maintenance of my organic hair is pretty simple: Avoid products with sulfates (Intuition has a full line of organic color safe products) and wash your hair less often and with water that’s not too hot.

So fellow hair color devotees, all I ask of you is this:  Try organic hair color at Intuition St. Pete (also in Clearwater!) and see what you think.   If the ecological and health benefits don’t sway you, the soft, chemical-free hair you get might be what convinces you to officially switch teams.

Here’s how my hair turned out:

Natural Beauty

Let me start off by saying, I am one of the many people who turned to the wildly popular beauty and hair communities on social media, for my styling solutions. There, I found girls who used the Internet to share tips and product recommendations for kinky, straight, and textured hair.

However, the more I tried to look for products or beauty gurus that talked about organic and chemical-free products the more empty searches I came up with. That’s when I went out into the world and found others like me at Intuition Salon and Spa in St. Pete.  It felt like I was part of a new exclusive club,  and since having my first organic color retouch I’ve been a committed member – and yes, I will admit to canceling my Saturday night plans in order to spend time here getting completely pampered by our organic hair color experts.

Whether you’re just starting your transition to natural and organic hair, I encourage you to take the leap.  Your hair, will thank you for it.

Why Organic?

When I was young and didn’t know any better,  I’d smother some of the cheapest store-bought hair and skin care products on my scalp and face, never thinking for a split second about what was actually IN them.  Nice packaging? Check!  Great commercial? Check!  Meh – they’re probably good enough.

Growing up during the height of a processed food nation, it would take a rare mind to stop and think, “Hmm … what’s in this stuff?” Should I actually read the label? And even if I do, do I know what these ingredients are, let alone how to pronounce them?

In other words, I stayed uneducated and oblivious, taking things as they were — until, as an adult, my health became compromised on numerous levels. You name it. I suffered from it.

But once I started learning the real deal about health, I had to overhaul my entire operating basis.  Let’s face it, you can’t just change one or two little habits and think your life will transform.

I was waking up. I was making a conscious effort to take my health seriously. I only had one body, and it would last far longer if I actually took real care of it … so I was ready to take control.

That meant I needed to make quality and conscious decisions about not only what I was going to eat, who I was going to spend time with, what products I was going to clean my house with, and for gawd’s sake, what I was going to put on my scalp and skin!

Our skin, including the scalp,  is actually the largest organ in the body and absorbs more than 80% of what we put on it!   So if you’re putting toxins on it,  you’re making yourself toxic! Yikes!

So going organic is not just a fad.  It’s not something you subscribe to because you want to appear and look ‘cool.’

Organic means safe, and that’s the bottom line.

I choose to switch to organic, non-GMO hair and skin care – like what is readily (and affordably!) available at the Organic Hair Care Specialist, Intuition Salon and Spa.  You can bet once I was in the know, there was no way anything toxic was going to enter this body of mine!

You can nourish your skin, fight the signs of aging, have fabulously healthy and great looking hair,  and a radiant glow by doing the same. If you’re on the fence, try it for yourself. I know you’ll become a believer too.

Treat yourself to the best hair and skincare out there. You ARE worth every penny.

You have a choice. Are you going to treat yourself to the most natural, organic skin care out there and do your body right?

So give the I’d love to hear from you, so please leave your comments in the box below.
